Guide
to fixed appliances
- Expect
aching teeth for 3-4 days:
A painkiller e.g. paracetamol may be
required to help you sleep on the first night. (Mr Kingdon’s
and Miss Brenchley’s patients only - Start chewing
sugar free gum immediately after appliance placement to
help relieve symptoms.)
- Keep
your teeth and brace spotlessly clean:
Use a small headed toothbrush in front
of a mirror with a good light to see what you are doing.
Having cleaned your teeth use disclosing tablets to ensure
total plaque removal. Finally use a fluoride rinse AFTER
cleaning.
- Take
care while eating:
Eat hard things with great care, cut
up apples. Avoid chews and toffees.
Only consume fizzy drinks and sweetened food at meal times.
- If
anything breaks: CONTACT THE PRACTICE
(Mr Kingdon’s patients only -
Don’t worry; simply wait until your next appointment.
Please ring the practice for advice if you are in pain.)
- Please
use the wax:
If any part of the brace is rubbing
or irritating, cover with wax to act as a cushion. Take
a small bit of wax, rub between you fingers until it becomes
pliable. Place over the offending irritation and mould until
it is no longer painful.
- Check-ups:
Remember that you should continue to
visit your own dentist for regular check-ups and any necessary
treatment during your treatment.
- Contact
Sports:
Special Mouth guards are needed to
accommodate the appliance and the tooth movements.
These can be made here for a fee of £30-£50.
