Guide
to removable retainers
- These
are your retainers. The larger one is for the top teeth. If
you have only had treatment on the upper or lower then the
retainer is worn on these teeth.
- These
MUST be worn every night for 3 months and then try to gradually
reduce to once a week. (e.g every other night for the 4th
month, twice a week for the 5th month etc). If the retainers
become difficult to fit then return to wearing them every
night. If you have problems with fitting the retainers let
us know. Keep them clean with a toothbrush.
- The
reason for using them is that the attachment to the bone surrounding
the roots of the teeth takes some time to adjust to their
new positions. The teeth must be held until then.
- Keep
an eye on the teeth and if you think there is movement let
me know immediately. Look after the retainers.
- I
will see you in 6 months time. Please bring the retainers
with you.
Permanent
retainers
If
you have had a permanent retainer fitted then you will be supplied
with a back-up plastic retainer. You have a permanent retainer
because the position of your teeth that you require is unstable.
If the metal retainer becomes detached wear the plastic back-up
retainer every night until you can come to see us for a repair
appointment.
Cost
of repair & replacement
£59.40
is charged for NHS replacement of each lost retainer
Repairs and replacements due to wear and tear are free for one
year post treatment only.
